How to Achieve a Truly Thankful Heart

“The perceived value of a gift correlates with the gratitude depth of the receiver.”

You may need to process that statement a bit.  Basically, it means that the more value or importance we place into something, the more and more grateful we are for that which we have received.

The problem that most Americans have is that we have so much already (compared to the rest of history and the world).  As a result, we tend to cultivate hearts of ungratefulness and lean more toward attitudes of entitlement.  In other words, we feel that we are entitled to (or deserve) a certain level of living.  But who says?  Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are inalienable but who is it that gives them to us in the first place?  Our Creator, God Himself.  We are completely empty without him.  In fact, God says that “we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”  1 Timothy 6:7.

How do you get to a true, deep and grateful attitude?  Here’s one way:

  • Don’t forget the “Why”.  When you go around the table and talk about What you’re thankful for, also include the why.  Because it is the Why that deepens your sense of thanks and helps you realize how truly blessed by God you are.

Happy thanksgiving.
