Life Is Better Together

For those who know, the first week of June is an emotional roller coaster for our family. Year after year, joy and grief take center stage in a dance that leaves us a bit exhausted.

As we muddled through these past days, there was one truth that wouldn’t leave me:

Life is better together.

I heard it at church yesterday. I witnessed it on our deck with friends. I read it in the encouragement posts, emails, and texts that flooded my boxes last Thursday.

Life is better together.

My tendency, (and yours too, I bet), is to pull back from people when I hurt. I lean toward secrecy instead of vulnerability when sadness wells up inside. My response must stem from my primal brain.

This year, I did something “not-me-like.” I invited people into my grey emotional state. I allowed conversations that only took place inside my heart to be spoken outside with friends – and it was good.

Life is better together.

That’s how God created you, to be in community with other people. They challenge our beliefs. They push us to higher levels. They bend down low with us when we need to be brought up. And, in the words of The writer of Hebrews,

“Do not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:25

Value and add value to those around you. Rekindle friendships cooled by time spent apart. Be in community because life is better together.
